Deceased 02-06-2011 (92 years old)
Albertina Sisulu was a South African Anti-Apartheid Activist. She was married to fellow activist Walter Sisulu. She was known to many as "a mother of the nation". Albertina joined the ANC Women's League in the 1940s and became a member of the Executive of the Federation of South African Women in 1954. On August 9, 1956, Albertina joined Helen Joseph and Sophia Williams-De Bruyn in a march of 20,000 women to the Union Buildings of Pretoria in protest against the apartheid government's requirement that women carry passbooks as part of the pass laws. This was one of the largest demonstrations staged in South African history.
