THE Mandela Bay Development Agency is gearing up to announce its new board later this month, with names like Safa president Danny Jordaan and businessman Motse Mfuleni lined up to take charge of the city’s best- performing public entity. ...Other board members include Govcomm chief executive Kenny Govender, Dimension Data’s Darryl Dennis, New Africa Consulting co- founder Donovan Nadison, the Eastern Cape Socio-Economic Consultative Council’s Baphelele Mhlaba, labour law specialist Advocate Luvuyo Bono, Khulile Vuyisile Nzo, Nomalizo Mandaba, Mncedisi Griffiths Sitoto, Samkelo Dlulane and Melikhaya Lucky Gosani.

Chris Hani District Municipality recently established the Chris Hani Development Agency, which is anticipated to act as a service delivery vehicle. This board has been established to serve on an interim basis for a period of a year and during this time; they have a mandate of creating systems and strategies for the functioning of the agency.

The mandate of the Chris Hani Development Agency (CHDA) is to unlock the development and economic potential within the three development corridors in the district through leveraging partnerships and maximising investments. The three development corridors are; Sisulu Development Corridor, Ndondo Development Corridor and the Calata Development Corridor.

As much as the CHDA will be an Implementing Agent for key infrastructure, development projects in the District. The agency will be an Economic development catalyst and co-ordinator for the realisation of the Special Economic Zone in the District as espoused in the District Development Agenda. Also key to its mandate is that it is expected to become a skills development partner that creates opportunities aligned with district priorities.

The board consists of members who bring wealth of expertise as they serve in reputable organizations. Speaking in a press conference after the first board meeting, the Chairperson Mr Somdyala who said “a development agency is a way of strengthening municipal capacity in implementing programmes that will help create jobs, enhance local economy and prioritize skills development”. He thanked Chris Hani District Municipality for showing faith in them. Mr Baphelele Mhlaba was appointed interim Chief Executive Officer.
