Candice de Carvalho is a co-director of Phatic Communications, a Johannesburg-based communications agency specialising in digital and traditional communications and social media marketing. Phatic Communications aims to consult on and execute full-service communication strategies, with a strong focus on measurement and accountability as well as excellent content.

Candice has a strong interest in the intersection between social development and communication strategies, and how to effectively present and disseminate ideas for the benefit of all stakeholders.

She holds an MSc (Med) in Human Genetics and an MSc (Med) in Bioethics and Health Law, both from the University of the Witwatersrand. She currently sits on the editorial board of the South African Cardiology and Stroke Journal, where she provides editorial content and advice on medical ethics.

Specialised projects or tasks as part of a team:

mimoney: Social media strategy included conceptualising an idea for Facebook to extend the ‘life’ of a major marketing event. The project was a resounding success in the online community and is currently being used by Quirk e-marketing as an example of an excellent social media campaign.

Truth is The Word: Online publishing strategy included set up, design and maintenace of a blog and e-newsletter with full social media functionality. Project also involves the creation of 3 - 5 minute videos which I plan, shoot, edit, produce and publish online.

Social Media Training: I was responsible for researching and developing a course/workshop designed to help marketers to use Twitter. I also developed the structure for a strategy session where the principles learned in the Twitter training are applied to the trainee’s specific market and business.

46664 Bangle: Experience includes developing US and European PR strategies and managing international relationships both with the media and other PR representatives.

RedLex: Part of team that developed a nationwide community upliftment programme with projects in enterprise development, environmental education and job creation. Project developed with partners such as the Gauteng Department of Education, Gauteng Department of Energy and Minerals, Sasol and Eskom. I was responsible for conceptualising the logistics and implementation of the national programme and writing the funding proposal. The proposal included government policy analysis and budgeting as well as a justification of the project in the context of South African needs and challenges.

Heidrick & Struggles: Project includes planning and managing an online newsletter.

'Social Biology', first year course

I was given free to reign to interpret the meaning of the words 'Social Biology' and develop course materials for the last six weeks of this course. I independently prepared and developed each bi-weekly lecture and weekly practical session. I also gave weekly class tests, two essays and one year-end exam.

Some of the topics covered in the course:
Control of disease: epidemiology, personal hygiene, physical and chemical control and immunization
Community health: Sewage disposal, sanitation, refuse removal, social factors important in health
Darwinian Biology
Role of the environment in the spread of disease. Emergence and re-emergence of disease.
