Doris Maria Wörfel

Doris Maria Wörfel

CEO

Currently resides in: Gauteng, South Africa

Born in Koblenz Germany

With a strong background in education and skills development - over the last almost two decades, Doris followed her passion for the Development of the Routes of Ancient Trade. She realised their potential as a powerful tool for creating jobs and immense trade, tourism and investment opportunities on a wider global scale.
Her mission is to raise awareness of the synergies between the economic, historical and cultural links of the Ancient Trade Routes and to re-awake these Trade Routes to initiate, support and advance new commercial structures and opportunities for economic Growth and Development globally, a so-called Renaissance of Ancient Trade.
Her aim is to develop and market Culture- and Heritage Tourism Routes along the Ancient Trade Routes and their cultural and heritage assets. The primary focus is on protected landscapes and areas with a World Heritage Status by UNESCO. The UNESCO World Heritage Site Mapungubwe and its adjacent communities serve as the key role model for her trade route development.
Driven by her passion to promote responsible tourism in rural communities along the Ancient Trade Routes, Doris established a Tourism Destination Management Company Southern Cross Experiences (PTY) Ltd.
From the year 2000 this company managed to introduce highly respected clients such as German Government Delegations and world-renowned publishers and journalists to the cultural and natural assets of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape and its adjacent communities along this Ancient Trade Route in Southern Africa.
During the "10 years Democracy of South Africa Celebrations" she was appointed by the South African Government tourism marketing agency South African Tourism to introduce her concept to the most respected global travel journalists and their newspapers, who travelled with her along this Route.
She promoted her initiative and its destinations as a panel speaker and keynote speaker at numerous global Trade-, Tourism- and Investment conferences.
Doris led and managed teams of academic and experts to implement multi-million initiatives and formulated and implemented the business plan for these proposals, always with the intention to develop and market the Ancient Trade Routes further.
From the year 2003, she initiated the Southern Cross Foundation, a think tank with a team of academics such as economic and financial consultants, archaeologists, ethno-anthropologist, indigenous knowledge-, leadership- and skills development experts and community- development-, tourism marketing- and public relations specialists.
In cooperation with this team of experts, she created a heritage tourism development concept called "The Southern Cross Heritage Tourism Development Programme" as an instrument for poverty elimination and socio-economic development for rural communities.
Together with her team, she linked with powerful government-, business- and industry leaders of all sectors and strategic investors both locally and internationally and global and regional development agencies such as UNESCO, the UN-ILO International Labour Organisation, the NEPAD Council, RETOSA Regional Tourism Organisation of SADC.
Doris instigated contracts and joint venture agreements with global key role players in various sectors. She was a member of the economic delegation at the State Visits of the South African State President THABO MBEKI to the Middle East to lobby the public and private sector of this region for the Ancient Trade Route Initiative.
The South African Presidency invited her in her role as CEO of Southern Cross Foundation to implement the Southern Cross Heritage Tourism Development Programme in the UNESCO World Heritage Site and Ancient Trade Empire Mapungubwe for the benefit of the communities adjacent to Mapungubwe.
During her visit to China in 2006 as an exhibitor at the BITTM Beijing International Travel and Tourism Market, she attracted the interest of the Chinese Government and the International and Chinese media for her Ancient Trade Route Development Initiative.
In her position as the CEO of Southern Cross Foundation, she managed to qualify for a Grant for the Southern Cross Heritage Tourism Development Programme with the focus on women and youth empowerment in Mapungubwe and its adjacent communities.
As skills development was the key element of the Grant, she participated in the UN-International Labour Organisation SCORE Sustaining Competitive and Responsible Enterprises Training Programme training for trainers. Finally, she qualified as a certified trainer and, in consequence, co-trained the beneficiary communities of the Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape with the focus on women tourism enterprises and youth empowerment in rural areas of Southern Africa.
