Role Description:  Our client - a national financial services institution – is looking for a HOD : Risk in their Capital Markets Business Department

HOD: Risk whom meet the requirements can call for a confidential discussion /or send their word document cv and indication of current TCOE for consideration

Duties and Responsibilities:


Risk Management

Management of the units risk (excluding credit risk which reports to HOD: Credit)

  • Operational focus
  • Analyze risk throughout the organization across all levels and reporting on this to ensure limitation of breach risks and excessive risk build up is identified. Ensure that identified risks are adequately dealt with and managed. 
  • Responsible for the reporting in terms of both regulatory and reporting to top level management structures. This comprises of daily business unit reports, two-weekly ALARMCO reports, monthly divisional Meeting and liquidity reports and quarterly RM, FC and Board reports. There may however be other reports required by the business on an adhoc basis.
  • Streamline the operational setup to be in line with the risk policy and to minimize the resultant operational risks. Close cooperation with the IT division is important, and competence in system set-up and other business operational matters.
  • Improve on existing risk frameworks to monitor delivery and conduct risk impact analysis against business strategy. Facilitates policy, risk and control discussions with stakeholders when required.
  • Responsibility for the development and coordination of risk management programs.
  • Responsibility for establishing a risk management framework that includes the businesses risk strategy, structure processes, culture and technological architecture.
  • Implementation of risk management techniques e.g. risk and control self-assessments, key risk indicators and scenario analysis.


Strategic focus

  • Have a healthy relationship with the Board and various Committees. These include the Risk Management Committee, Finance Committee and Credit Committee. The main focus is to design and maintain Risk management and governance for the entire business. A key focus is to implement improvements to existing structures.
  • Your responsibility is to design and draft new Risk management policies and methodologies with a view of improving and reviewing current ones so as to have a positive strategic impact. Some of the policies that would fall within this roles scope would be the Enterprise-wide Risk Management Policy, Operational Risk policies, CCM-related policies especially the Funding Liquidity Risk Policy, Market Risk capital quantification policy,  and the Companies Mandate.
  • Coordinate the annual mandate update process.
  • Being able to provide top management with input to determine the businesses risk to calculate capital for risk.


  • Management Function
  • Manage a team of at least 6 staff, ensuring that the department functions smoothly to achieve deliverables. Responsible for Development, Training and team motivationals 


  • Quantitative Analysis
  • Analyzing risk to determine the quantitative risk exposures by means of quantitative risk modelling which includes building, testing and the maintenance of quantitative valuation and risk models like data models and structured equity and debt finance deal models.
  • Responsible for the configuration of the trading system for the data, structured equity and debt finance deals.
  • Provide, monitor and analyze market and credit risk numbers as well as economic capital.
  • Provide recommendations regarding the risk levels as well as possible hedging solutions for certain business units
  • Handle ad hoc requests and queries regarding any risk metrics.


Role Qualifications and Experience:

  • BCom (Honours)/ BSc (Hons) with a focus on Stats or Mathematical subjects.
  • 6 – 8 years experience in a similar role


Competencies Required:

  • Essential to have sound knowledge of the latest regulatory developments re: Basel, SAM and Solvency
  • Knowledge of King IV and III is also important
  • Experience in system and process set up and design
  • Knowledge on financial instruments (includes market risk, credit risk, liquidity risk and funding based instruments)
  • Must have an understanding of:
    • Derivatives (including interest rate, equity and FX)
    • Financial and capital markets (a thorough practical understanding).
  • Team player
  • Excellent communication skills with staff at all levels within the organization
  • An excellent understanding and knowledge around all major risk disciplines.
  • Eye for detail and accuracy
  • Must be able to work under pressure
  • Organized and hands on individual
  • Strong Leadership Skills
