Academic Achievements

Selected to be a part of the Goldman Sachs-GIBS 10,000 Woman Program | 2013

Goldman Sachs launched the 10,000 Women programme in March 2008. It is a 100 million, five-year campaign to foster greater shared economic growth by providing 10,000 underserved women around the world with a business and management education.

The programme is founded on research conducted by Goldman Sachs, the World Bank, and others which suggests that this kind of investment can have a significant impact on GDP growth.

Research also suggests that such an investment in women can have a significant multiplier effect that leads not only to increased revenues and more employees for businesses, but also healthier, better-educated families, and ultimately more prosperous communities. 10,000 Women is coordinated in local markets by a network of more than 80 academic and NGO partners. More than thirty of the world’s leading business schools are participating in 10,000 Women, including seven of the top ten.

In South Africa, 10,000 Women is managed and delivered by the Gordon Institute of Business Science. By the end of 2013, the school will provide 300 underserved female entrepreneurs with a business and management training delivered by leading faculty and industry specialists.

This will be supported by mentorship, networking events, community dialogues and business advisory that will enable the women to grow their businesses.

Tash Govender, Director The Business School of South Africa

"Inspirational, intelligent and approachable are definitely traits that I would attribute to Fiona Richardson. I met Fiona on the Goldman-Sachs 10,000 Women in Business Programme where we had both been selected as participants on Cohort 4 of the international programme that is conducted locally by the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS). First impressions last and Fiona is certainly a woman that stood out from the rest on our Orientation Day. Beguiling in her turquoise dress and with a warm smile ever present on her face, she displayed an aura of grace and compassion. It is no wonder that many of our other 48 contemporaries present on that day felt drawn to her.

It has been just a few short months made up of intermittent training days and I consider myself very lucky to have shared some time and space with Fiona. I have gotten to know her on both a personal and academic level and I am enthralled by her proficiency as a fellow student, her commitment as a Mother and her prowess as a business woman. In a tumultuous age when we struggle to cope with our daily lives and routine, it is certainly an inspiration to see Fiona balance all aspects of her life so well and yet still take the time to befriend others and make the effort to lift us up with her natural spirit and enduring demeanour. I am privileged to know Fiona and I intend to keep her around for life.

The nomination of South Africa's Most Influential Women in Business and Government 2013 most certainly fits well with Fiona Richardson as I am confident that she displays all of the characteristics that the title is synonymous with and I for one will not be surprised if she adds so much more to such an already established championship.

Matthew Keulemans

"During the time I have known Fiona Richardson I have always been encouraged and enlightened by her to discover and learn more ways of making our business more efficient; effective and productive and to plan for the future.

Fiona is more than a person who just does what she is expected to do; she is a great enthusiastic leader in my opinion.

If you didn't know Fiona and had just met her as a complete stranger for example, if Fiona could see you need help in some way she will talk to you ,ask you what you do ,what your passions are and how you make a living.

Fiona is on it right away pointing You in the right direction, sending you long descriptive emails with all the best advice and contacts to help your business grow and become a better business through networking, workshops and contacts that she has seen at work.

I would recommend Fiona to anyone because of the caliber of person she is and because of her genuine interest in helping others who are seeking help in their businesses and in the marketing / entrepreneurial side.

Jane Franklin,Business Support Manager Ethicon Gynecology

"I have had the pleasure of working with Fiona Aitken-Richardson a number of times over the past 6 years. Her ability to understand and read people is incredible. Her intellectual curiosity is part of the reason why Fiona is so successful in her business. All her decisions are made with integrity as she will always do what is best for her clients.
Fiona is big picture orientated, her main business and love is interior design but she is always searching for and identifying other business opportunities.
I have always said that Fiona is the “Florence Nightingale” of interior design as there has been numerous occasions where she has taken cushions/linen from her own home or purchased the necessary items to decorate someone else’s home that was going through a difficult time and could not afford such luxuries.
Fiona is a caring, loving and bright woman who will go out of her way for her clients and friends. I would recommend Fiona’s business to everyone and I would definatley vote for her to be 2013 South Africa’s most influential women in business.
" -

Olivier Eyaba Munga, Founder & Consultant Changing Tides Limited

"I had the excellent fortune of meeting Fiona Aitken-Richardson a year ago though it quickly began to feel as though we had known each other our whole lives. When Fiona informed me that she had been nominated for the 2013 South Africa’s Most Influential Women in Business and Government Awards, I was thrilled for her but not surprised at all, for a number of reasons:
- Anyone meeting or just seeing Fiona cannot fail to notice her incredible aura and charisma, which emanates a good spirit, a sense of purpose and a healthy confidence. Fiona immediately puts people at ease and makes them feel like they are in the presence of someone very caring and competent.
- Fiona is also a deeply spiritual being, keenly attuned to more subtle aspects of people’s natures, their characters, emotions, intentions and personalities. This makes her a very wise and efficient entrepreneur and also a great leader. Only one who can profoundly understand others can effectively lead and influence them.
- Fiona has a true gift for getting the right like-minded people around a table to make conscious associations and business happen. Over the past year she has invested an incredible amount of time and effort to connect very dynamic and successful entrepreneurs to one another, out of what I can only be described as a truly selfless sense of duty and responsibility to society & the business community, as well as a keen knowing that these individuals share similar intentions, goals and characters. I have personally benefitted form this through new friendships and meaningful associations
facilitated by her, and moreover all these entrepreneurs became members of my company’s International Founders network called The Entrepreneurs’ Circle. Links to their profiles on my website are listed below:

• Entrepreneur Chris Morton -
• Entrepreneur Ingrid Lotze -
• Entrepreneur Sally Rossiter -
• Entrepreneur Jonathan Jacobs -
• Entrepreneur Will Harris -
• Entrepreneur Shingai Ngara -
• Entrepreneur Paul Smith -
• Entrepreneur Bashir Khan -

For every one of these incredible introductions, Fiona actually took the time to be there when we first physically met, and this is a true testament to her caring and selfless nature, without which one cannot be elevated to the honorable rank of person of influence. Fiona has undoubtedly earned this rank in my eyes and mind and I am sure that is also the case for most people who have been as fortunate as I have to have met and befriended her. For the reasons listed in this letter and many more that can only be experienced, Fiona truly is the most influential person I know.

1. The capacity or power of persons or things to be a compelling force on or
produce effects on the actions, behavior, opinions, etc., of others.
2. A person whose actions and opinions strongly influence the course of

"Having been involved with the GIBS 10,000 Women Goldman Sachs Initiative and getting to know Fiona allows for me to recommend Fiona for the award.
If women of the next generation possess the qualities that Fiona has, then our country can only prosper. Her endless passion for people, entrepreneurship and looking at the greater good beyond herself makes her a truly remarkable women.
Because your award recognises the true essence of selfless leadership of women in South Africa, I have no doubt that Fiona is a winner on any platform.
