Ian Jandrell

Dean at the University of Witwatersrand


Ian is Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment department at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.

He is also a Personal Professor in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering at Wits, where he holds the CBI-electric Chair of Lightning.

Ian holds directorships of: Crown Publications, Wits Enterprise and Innopro and is currently the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists. Ian is a trustee of the Accenture Education Trust in South Africa.

At Wits Ian is joint leader of the High Voltage and the Lightning/EMC Research Group. He has an NRF C-rating as a researcher and is the author or co-author of more than 100 papers in the areas of High Voltage Engineering, Earthing and Lightning Protection and Industrial EMC.

Ian is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Lightning Research and a Member of the Scientific Committee of the International Conference on Lightning Protection.

He is a registered Professional Engineer (PrEng) and is regular consultant to industry in the areas of forensic engineering, earthing and lightning protection and industrial EMC.

Ian is a Senior Member of the IEEE (SMIEEE), and a Fellow of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (FSAIEE).

In 1994 Ian was named SAIEE Engineer of the Year, and in 2011 he was named as the recipient of the SAIEE's premier award, the President's Award.

Co-authored, together with Dr Ryan Blumenthal of the Department of Forensic Pathology at the University of Pretoria, and Dr Nicholas West of Wits, the paper judged by an independent external review panel set up by the University of Pretoria, to be the best work by a team of researchers for 2012. The paper relates to a sixth mechanism of lightning injury and was published in the American Journal of Forensic Pathology in September 2012.
