Johnny joined the liberation movement, African National Congerss (ANC) in 1975. He recruited a huge number of people into the ANC and its military wing Umkhonto we Sizwe. Johnny transported these recruits illegally into Swaziland where they were received by the ANC representatives such as the late Moses Mabhida, Bafana Duma and Stan Mabizela. Johnny and his Comrade Ian Rwaxa were instructed by Moses Mabhida to bring to Swaziland one of the ANC leaders, Andrew Masondo who was just released from Robben Island after more than ten years. Masondo was banished to Umlazi in Kwa Zulu Natal. The task seemed to be impossible because Masondo was under twenty four hour survaillance by the Police Special Branch. After studying the area where he lived, one late evening they walked to Masondo's house and told him to leave with them immediately. He was instructed not take any luggage and walked with him and his daughter under the cover of darkness to where their vehicle was parked. Masondo received a Hero's welcome in exile.
