- Helen Joseph was a South African Anti-Apartheid Activist. Helen founded the Federation of South African Women On August 9, 1956. She headed a march of 20,000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the pass laws. This was one of the largest demonstrations staged in South African history. In 1962, she became the first person to be placed under house arrest by the apartheid government. Helen Joseph passed away on the 25 December 1992 at the age of 87.
