Mangwashi Phiyega, best known as "Riah", is the Chief Executive Officer of Safer South Africa Foundation.
She is a past National Commissioner of the South African Police Service. She was appointed National Police Commissioner in June 2012. She completed her five (5) year Term of Office in the Police Service in June 2017. She is the second National Commissioner to conclude her term since 1994, the commencement of South Africa's Democratic dispensation. She was the first woman to be appointed in the position of heading the Police Service in the 103 years of the establishment of a Police Service in South Africa. In October 2015 Phiyega was suspended by the President, following a recommendation of the Farlam Commission of Inquiry into the deaths of protesting miners in Marikana in 2012. She is reviewing both the findings of the Farlam Commission and the Claassen Board of Inquiry.
She was previously a Group Executive of ABSA Bank LTD. She was Group Executive of Transnet Limited. She was an Executive at the National Ports Authority of South Africa. She also was Director for Development at National Council for Child Welfare. She served as Deputy Chairperson for the Public Office Bearers Commission. She led and chaired the Presidential State Owned Enterprises Review Committee. She was Commissioner of the Road Accident Fund Commission.
