The LA Lakers became NBA champions once more on Monday, securing their 17th title in Florida, where they beat Miami Heat in Game 6 of the finals.

Lakers record-breaking season

In achieving the feat, the Lakers have sent several record tumbling, and we take a look at some of the mind-blowing stats.

Most NBA championships

It took the Lakers ten years to finally reach the mark, but they are now the team with the joint-highest number of NBA championships, together with the Boston Celtics.

Most titles in the 21st century

Despite the decade-long lean spell, the LA Lakers remain the most successful franchise of the 21st century, with six titles since 2000, followed by the San Antonio Spurs just two behind.

Monday’s losing finalists are not too far behind, having won in 2006, 2012 and 2013, with their last two championships coming during LeBron James’ years in Miami.

Most finals MVP honours

It’s no surprise that the game’s biggest superstar also claimed some individual records of his own during the Lakers’ dominant championship run.

James became only the second player since the legendary Michael Jordan to Michael Jordan to win four or more NBA Finals MVP honours.

Most playoff games in NBA history

James also recorded his 260th playoff game on Monday, which is the most by any player in the history of the league.

First player to win NBA finals with three separate teams

You guessed it! The man who achieved the feat is none other that the great LeBron James, who secured two rings with the Heat, one in his native Cleveland, and another with the Lakers.

Another individual record

It was not only James who made individual history on the night, as his teammate Rajon Rondo became the first player to win titles with both the Lakers and their rivals, the Celtics.
