Norman Drake

Rail Civil Design Engineer at Atkins


Norman is a self-motivated, high energy and hard working individual with experience in Civil and Structural Engineering. He is currently working towards his Chartered Engineer status from the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and is a registered member with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). He is able to use his own initiative and work as part of a team. He is an effective communicator at all levels and has good problem solving and analytical skills. Norman has the ability to work well under pressure and as a people’s person, he believes that he can bring out the best in people which he interacts with.

Since joining Atkins Middle East, Norman has been responsible for the development of various Civil Specifications and Design Criteria on the Etihad Rail Project. This also required the linking, validation and verification of these specifications to the project requirements. At present, Norman is leading, developing and coordinating the Civils Works of all the Etihad Rail Facilities. This includes all components of the Marshalling Yards, Maintenance Depots, Operation and Bulk handling Facilities. Other responsibilities included assisting the Utilities Team in managing the Overhead Transmission Line Interface on the Project, which requires liaising with the Client, affected Stakeholders and Sub-Consultant on an ongoing basis.

Prior to joining Atkins Middle East in 2011, he was based in the UAE and South Africa undertaking Technical and Design roles on various projects which included: Detailing of RC Structures, Design of Civil Engineering Services, Conceptual Interchange Design, Urban Development, Transportation Infrastructure Master Planning, Public Transport Infrastructure Design, Contract Administration, Development of Particular and Project Specifications and Site Supervision. In 2010, Norman has also gained valuable exposure on a Rail Project whilst on a secondment to South Africa.
