Odwa is currently working as a HSE Manager for the South African Sugar Association: Terminal, as of 01 October 2012. Odwa has been promoted from his job as a H & S Officer since joining on 01 February 2011. The scope of Odwa’s job has been expanded to incorporate additional duties within SA Sugar Association as a whole.

Key responsibilities involve ensuring legal compliance with relevant legislation, management and coordination of the health, safety & environmental system, facilitate training, as well as the development; revision and implementation of strategic plans, policies and procedures, compilation of the health and safety annual report, to identify hazards, and to conduct risk assessments and incident investigations.

Prior joining SAST, Odwa worked for PwC from 2009 - 2011, as a Health and Safety Consultant, responsible for the provision of Sustainable Development Assurance of Health and Safety data, as well as conformance to King 3 Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Guidelines and Board Evaluations. Odwa was also involved in Health and Safety Gap Analysis, Legal Compliance and OHSAS 18001 Certification Audits. Some of the key clients include, Anglo Gold Ashanti, Anglo Platinum, Anglo America, SASOL and Gold Fields. In 2010, also obtained overseas experience by conducting a sustainability development assurance audit for Gold Fields in Peru, South America.

In 2009, Odwa worked for the South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI), as an Environmental Health and Safety Intern, responsible for the coordination of the environmental health and safety system.

For the period 2007 - 2009, Odwa also obtained extensive health and safety experience whilst undertaking studies, at the Durban University of Technology. Experience obtained include, environmental health and safety legal compliance audits and risk assessments. Industries, to which most of the projects were conducted, include Dunlop Tyres, Sasko Mills, SAB, Huletts Refinery and Impala Platinum.

Management and continuous monitoring of the Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) System.

Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, like Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHAct), Commpensation of Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA), National Environmental Management Act (NEMA), as well as the National Environmental Management Waste Act (NEMWA) and other relevant legislation and regulations thereof.

To facilitate and coordinate training and appointment of SHE Representatives, as well as other SHE-related training like First Aid, Fire Marshalls and Hazardous Substance coordinators.

Responsible for the identification of hazards and to conduct risk assessments and investigation of incidents, so as to recommend control measures to mitigate or avoid hazards thereof.

Ensure continuous monitoring and measurement of relevant stresses, including noise, dust, lead acetate, as well as ergonomics.

To raise staff awareness and change the behaviour and attitude, as well as practices of staff towards SHE.

To develop SHE targets and implement the necessary action plans, as well as a follow up of any external SHE audits and inspections thereof .

To facilitate, coordinate and Chair SHE Committee Meetings, as well as ensure the implementation of matters arising thereof.

Responsible for preparing a SHE budget plan, strategic plan and to ensure the implementation and review of the plans and consolidate a SHE annual report thereof.

Prepared the organisation for a NOSA Certification which has been achieved and awarded in November 2011.

Also responsible for the Management of the Security System, including the CCTV System, follow-up on security reports, liaise and communicate with the Security Company concerned.
