Patrick Mthombeni graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in Development Studies, looking at issues on social policy formulation and ethnographic study on the effects of social activities of rugby students on their individual sport competence in 2010, in 2012 he obtained his Bachelors of Arts Honours degree with a Distinction Thesis in Industrial Sociology focusing on: sociology of work, gender issues in the work-place and got a top of the class distinction thesis paper on the social-background factors affecting the first year sociology students at the University of Johannesburg.
In 2012 he joined the Department of Science and Technology in conjunction with the National Research Foundation and Human Social Dynamics (DST-NRF/HSD) as an Intern researcher. In mid 2013 he was chosen as one of the International Erasmus Mundus Students for a Masters of Arts degree in Sociology and Social Research at Newcastle University, United Kingdom on specialization areas: sexuality and queer studies, gender and development, social identity and youth identity and a Dissertation titled: Household Division of Labour by Same-Sex (Lesbian) Families in North East England.
In the past 3 years he has been awarded three prestigious Academic Awards: NRF locally based in South Africa - The Department of Science and Technology/National Research Foundation Grant and two International awards, Erasmus Mundus in association with the European Commission a Master Scholarship at the Newcastle University, United Kingdom and Doctoral Scholarship Abroad looking at the Social construction of identity by ageing LGBTQI. He is very much driven and interested in the work of sociological theorists like Michel Foucault on sexuality, Judith Butler on gender, and Raewyn Connell on global inequality. As a young South African junior Sociologist, he is methodologically interested in mixed methods.
Patrick Mthombeni became the Chair for the Student Council Committee for Sociology and Social Research at Newcastle University and served as a member in the Sociology Board of Studies and in the Newcastle University Humanities and Social Sciences Library Board.

He is currently a member of the following professional associations:
