Peter Attard Montalto is a Director and emerging market economist at Nomura covering South Africa as well as Emerging Europe. He has responsibility for devising both the long run outlook and high frequency commentary and forecasting on these countries. Peter acts as a key link between the bank and policy makers in these countries and has hosted numerous events between top level policy makers and significant global investors. He also looks at issues such as long run currency valuation and cross-regional macroeconomic and financial stability risks as well as wider issues of EU institutional reform, EU economic policy and convergence. He has overseen the development of Nomura's Global Emerging Market's Risk Index (GEMaRI) which covers 36 countries using 16 indicators. He works across the bank with clients of global markets and investment banking leveraging Nomura’s local offices in his countries, Nomura's large retail client base in Japan (his research is translated and distributed to retail clients) and other organisations such as think tanks and governments. Peter has advised on a number of significant sovereign bond issuances as well as being actively involved in banking deals relating to his countries. He is currently beginning to build out Sub-Saharan Africa research at Nomura.

Peter is gaining an external profile with regular appearances on CNBC, Bloomberg TV, BBC Newsnight, his own weekly slot on CNBC Africa and several columns in the FT, regular op-ed's in South Africa's BusinessDay as well as local media. Peter was previously at Lehman Brothers. Peter studied Economics at St John’s College Cambridge where his particular interests were the linkages between financial markets and monetary policy.
