iCareSA is a registered Non-profit Organisation which distributes “Care Bags” to to new mothers in maternity wards in government hospitals.

The concept of iCareSA was birthed after becoming aware of the high infant mortality rate in South Africa. After considerable research the realisation some of the main reasons for the infant mortality rate were identified as a hygiene, as well as, education and information on how to care for new borns.

Hence, the aim of iCareSA is to supply all new mothers in state hospitals with basic health care products to care for herself and her new baby. Reading material containing information on breastfeeding (which is strongly advised and encouraged) and basic health care essentials is also included in the pack.

At this stage distribution is on a monthly basis at Leratong Hospital and Dr Yusuf Dadoo hospital, both situated on the West Rand of Johannesburg.

Although a mammoth task is at hand, iCareSA has a goal to roll out the programme to all state hospitals throughout the country on a daily basis by 2015.

The following contents are included in the care kit:
Aqueous Cream
Cotton wool
Surgical spirits
Sanitary pads
Baby soap
Face soap (for mom)
Face cloth x2 mom and baby
Tooth brush
Tooth paste
Nipple cream
Bum cream
10 new born disposable nappies

The following reading material is also included in the bag:
How to breast feed?
What to do when you are HIV positive?
How to treat diarrhea?
