Rick Menell has had a 40 year career in the mining industry worldwide, returning to South Africa in 1991 and ultimately leading Anglovaal Mining Ltd as Executive Chairman, and then Teal Exploration & Mining Inc as CEO up to 2008 when he retired as an executive. He has served as President of the SA Chamber of Mines, as Chairman of the SA Tourism Board and on numerous boards of organizations as Director, Deputy Chairman and Chairman including Bateman Engineering, Harmony Gold, Avgold, Associated Manganese, African Rainbow Minerals, Standard Bank Group, Mutual & Federal Insurance, Telkom SA, the NBI, CDE, the SA Business Trust and the Tourism Enterprise Partnership.

Rick is currently Deputy Chairman of Gold Fields Ltd and a non-executive director of Weir Group plc (Senior Independent Director) and Sibanye Gold Ltd. He is also Senior Advisor to the Credit Suisse Group and Chairman of its SA subsidiary. He serves as a Council member of Business Leadership SA. In the non-profit area Rick is currently founding co-Chairman of City Year SA Youth Service Organization, Chairman of the Carrick Foundation, Chair of PAST (Palaeontological Scientific Trust) and a trustee of the Claude Leon Foundation. He was one of the convenors of the Dinokeng Scenarios Project and was for 12 years a Governor of the mining industry group of the World Economic Forum.

Rick is married to Caroline Cullinan. They share four grown children and live in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
