Dr Samuel Laryea

A/Prof of Construction Economics and Management

Currently resides in: Gauteng, South Africa

Born in sunyani-ghana Ghana

I am an Associate Professor of Construction Economics and Management at University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. My journey in the built environment field began at Suhum Secondary Technical School in Ghana where I studied Building Construction with Additional Mathematics from 1994 to 1996.

I obtained a distinction in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Exam in 1996 and the University Entrance Exam in 1997. These exams qualified me to study BSc (Hons) Building Technology at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Ghana (1998-2002) where I graduated in the top 20 percent of my class despite extensive involvement in student leadership activities including serving as President of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC). I practiced in my professional discipline for 2 years and then received a KNUST Scholarship in 2004 which enabled me to begin my MPhil/PhD studies in Construction Management. In 2007 I received an ORS Scholarship from the University of Reading, UK which enabled me to transfer and complete my PhD research on the relationship between risk and price in construction procurement in Dec. 2008.

Before joining University of the Witwatersrand in August 2012 as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Construction Economics and Management, I worked at the University of Reading, UK between 2009 and 2012 as a Lecturer in Construction Procurement (2010-12); Post-Doctoral Academic Fellow in Construction Management (2009-10); and Graduate Teaching Assistant (2008). I also worked as a Clerk of Works in the Development Office at KNUST, Kumasi (2002-03); National Service Personnel in the Department of Public Works, Fanteakwa District Assembly (2002-03); and Co-organizer for the West Africa Built Environment Research (WABER) Conference (2008-present).

My research interests are in construction procurement systems, price formation and commercial relationships in contracts, project risk management, sustainable and innovative procurement technologies, and construction in developing countries. I am a member of the editorial board of two academic journals; written more than 40 publications; and secured funding in excess of 2 million Rand for various research activities. In 2012, I became an NRF-rated researcher; and won two prestigious awards at the University of Reading for research excellence including the Research Endowment Trust Fund (RETF) prize for best research paper in the Faculty of Science and also the best PGCAP Project Prize. In 2013, I became a recipient of the Friedel Sellschop Award designed to recognize the talents of exceptional young academics.

Professionally, I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), UK and member of the CIOB and RICS. I am always enthusiastic to help others; be a voice for justice; and serve through leadership. I am also keen to expand my research and scholarship through working with research students, industry practitioners, governments and colleagues in Africa and other parts of the world.
