Sonwabo Mbananga

Director: Media Liaison / Ministerial Spokesperson, Department of Correctional Services

Studied toward a National Dimploma in Marketing at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) on a part time basis, after matriculating at Gardens Commercial High School (GCHS) in 1994.Started work in the financial sector as an Enquiries Clerk, Bank Teller and later as a Risk Administration Clerk for First National Bank. Joined the Vodacom Group in 1998 as a Customer Care Consultant, soon thereafter joined Old Mutual also as a Customer Care Consultant in their medical aid division. In 2000 joined free-to-air television broadcaster e-TV as a Team Leader in Corporate Communications. Returned to university on a full time basis to persue a qualification in Journalism. After acquiring a Journalism qualification at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) joined the inaugural e-TV 12-month Internship program under the mentorship of former e-News Executive Producer and current Yfm CEO Kanthan Pillay and former e-News Editor-in-Chief and current Press Ombudsman Joe Tlholoe. Cut his teeth in Journalism as e-News reporter in Johannesburg and later as Bulletin Editor for e-TV's breakfast show Sunrise. Later worked as Insert Producer for e-TV both in Johannesburg and in Cape Town. In 2006 joined the University of the Western Cape's Public Relations Division working as a Senior Researcher and Writer for internal publications, also worked as Media Liaison to UWC Rector Prof. Brian O'Connel. Joined SABC News in 2007 after being head-hunted by the Public Broadcaster and worked as a News Reporter covering the Western Cape. Persued further qualifications in Developmental Journalism at the Sol Plaatjie School of Journalism at Rhodes University and also at Wits University. Joined Government in 2009 after being head-hunted by former Home Affairs Minister and current Correctional Services Minister, Hon. Nosiviwe Noluthando Mapisa-Nqakula - MP, as Director: Media Liaison in the office of the Minister and as Spokesperson to the Minister of Correctional Services.
