Steve Tshwete

South African Activist


Born 12-11-1938

Deceased 26-04-2002 (63 years old)

Steve Tshwete was a South African Activist and a member of the African National Congress (ANC). He was involved in Umkhonto we Sizwe. Tshwete was imprisoned by the apartheid government on Robben Island from 1964 to 1983. He became Minister of Sport and Recreation when Apartheid ended in 1994. He was part of Thabo Mbeki's first government as Minister of Safety and Security from 1999 to 2002. The Steve Tshwete Local Municipality in Mpumalanga Province is named after him.
