Zama is a language professional specialising in translation between English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa and is accredited by the South African Translators Institute (SATI). He has practised in the language field since 1976 in one capacity or another, including that of leading the language and strategic writing services function at Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd. He has since left the employ of the company after having diligently served it for 20 years.
He is currently head of Multilingualism SA, a business unit of Smartserve Enterprises (Pty) Ltd a company he leads as CEO..
Multilingualism SA is a language and strategic writing services business that is intended to provide comprehensive services to a broad spectrum of clients across the private and public sectors. The unit also serves as a platform for local and international dialogue on multilingualism in the business sector. These debates seek to, in the final analysis, highlight the value of language and multilingualism in business interaction with employees, customers and other stakeholders.

Zama also serves as Sessional Teacher at the School of Literature Language and Media (SLLM) at Wits University and is attached to that school's Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies.

Background:
I have spent a better part of my worklife in the language environment. I entered this field through employment at the Department of Justice of the then Transkei where I served as an interpreter. I later became a teacher and specialised in teaching English and Afrikaans at secondary school level. I later worked for a number of progressive law firms during the apartheid days where I was largely responsible for interpreting for families of political detainees and prisoners.
In 1994 I joined Eskom as the first black language services practitioner. When I was later appointed manager of the unit I extended the team by bringing on board practitioners responsible for Sesotho, Sepedi and IsiZulu.

Furthermore, I initiated the revision of the Eskom English/Afrikaans dictionary and commissioned the compilation of a glossary of energy terms for IsiXhosa, IsiZulu, Sesotho and Sepedi.
I served on the Language Plan Task Group which was tasked with devising a language plan for the country. I also served as external marker and examiner for Unisa’s post-graduate studies in Translation. I have until recently been external tutor and marker for Wits University’s post graduate studies in Translation.
