JOHANNESBURG – The father of a 10-year-old boy who died after a medical procedure carried out by Dr Abdulhay Munshi has denied any involvement in the medic’s death.

Mohammadh Sayed has broken his silence in a statement on Friday afternoon amid widespread speculation that Munshi’s death was a targeted hit.

Sayed said that he has instructed his legal team to engage with the investigating and prosecuting authorities on a regular basis to ensure that justice was achieved in a legitimate matter.

Munshi died after being shot six times on Wednesday when he stopped to check his car which had been rear-ended.

He was a co-accused in a medical negligence case alongside Dr Peter Beale.

The pair had been charged with culpable homicide following the 12-year-old year’s death.

Chair of the Health Professions Council of South Africa, Dr Kgosi Letlape said the killing is a result of a failed legal system.

“There are statutory provisions of how these matters should be dealt with. In any procedural death, an inquest becomes mandatory, and depending on the outcome of the inquest – if the inquest recommends that there be criminal charges proffered against some of the participants then you would do that. But to parade us as criminals, we then become vulnerable to vigilantism.”

Meanwhile, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has reacted with shock to the murder of Dr Munshi.

He said it’s unthinkable that anyone would murder a health worker, especially at a time when the psychological and well being of medical officials is under the spotlight.
