Gavin Hunt determined to turn things around at Kaizer Chiefs

Newly-appointed Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt has opened up on the magnitude of the task that awaits him, as he looks to bring back the glory days at South Africa’s most famous football club.

The Amakhosi faithful got the news they had been hoping for earlier in the week when the four-time league winner was unveiled as the new man at the helm.

This is after a disappointing season where the club’s title chase ended in disappointment, despite occupying top spot for the best part of the campaign.

Speaking in his first interview since joining Chiefs, Hunt said he hoped to contribute some silverware during his time at the club.

“I’m really privileged and honoured to be at Kaizer Chiefs,” he told the club’s official website. “Sometimes football is all about timing. Hopefully, we can make it an enjoyable stay and win some trophies.”

Hunt added;

“If you look at the history of the football club from my time – 1981 – as a player against them, to see how the club has grown. For me, it was the biggest club in South Africa… supporter-wise, trophy-wise. The last few years have been a little bit barren, but hopefully, we can turn things around.”

A different challenge

Hunt brings to Chiefs a host of experience in the local top flight, having occupied the helm at five other premiership clubs before moving to the Soweto giants.

“We were always the ones playing against Chiefs, trying to quieten the supporters,” Hunt continued. “Now we have to liven up the supporters, and it won’t be easy.”

Hunt replaces German mentor Ernst Middendorp in the hot seat. The man he succeeds had a season and a half at the helm, where he finished second in the league in his first full campaign.

The former Supersport United coach has commended Middendorp and his technical staff for a job well done.

“The previous regime did really well, unbelievably well. Hopefully, we can do one better and improve on the results.”
