Indian Premier League: Oldest players in the IPL

The Indian Premier League (IPL) kicked off in the United Arab Emirates over the weekend, with some of the game’s veterans still at it.

We take a look at the oldest players in the IPL in the competition’s 2020 edition.

Oldest players in the IPL

37- Dale Steyn (South Africa) – Royal Challengers Bangalore

One of the finest fast bowlers the game has ever seen is still going strong, despite creeping in on 40.

Dale Steyn will spearhead the Royal Challengers Bangalore bowling attack in his second season since his return to the franchise.

39 – Mahendra Singh Dhoni (India) – Chennai Super Kings

The oldest Indian player on show in the ongoing edition of the IPL is legendary skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket.

He will still be expected to be as sharp as ever behind the stumps, despite his advanced age.

39 – Shane Watson (Australia) – Chennai Super Kings

The Chennai Super Kings have quite a few experienced players in their ranks, including the former Australia all-rounder, who turned 39 in June.

Shane Watson will be expected to give the three-time champions a good start at the top of the order, and can also chip in with a few valuable wickets throughout the campaign.

40 – Chris Gayle (West Indies) – Kings XI Punjab

The Universe Boss” has been playing top-level cricket for over two decades, having made his international debut 21-years ago.

He was left out of the Kings XI Punjab’s opener against the Delhi Capitals on the eve of his 41st birthday, but is expected to be one of the players to light up IPL 2020.

41 – Imran Tahir (South Africa) – Chennai Super Kings

Another member of “Dad’s Army” who did not feature on the opening weekend of the competition is Pakistan-born South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir, who turned 41 in March.

The veteran bowler remains one of the format’s most effective spinners and, despite being the oldest player in the IPL this year, is sure to show off his boundless energy by sprinting all the way to the dugout as soon as he gets a wicket.
