Kaizer Chiefs coach: Five men who could take the hot seat

After the sacking of Ernst Middendorp, there has been keen interest on who would be the next Kaizer Chiefs coach.

Amakhosi fell just short of their first PSL title in five years in the first full season of the German’s second stint at the club.

He along with assistant, Shaun Bartlett were subsequently both shown the door earlier in the week.

With the club expected to name a new man at the helm ahead of the upcoming season, beginning in October, we take a look at who could be the next Kaizer Chiefs coach.

Next Kaizer Chiefs coach

Gavin Hunt: The obvious fan favourite to land the role, Gavin Hunt seems to be out of a job, following the sale of Bidvest Wits.

The former Hellenic defender is among the most successful coaches in the PSL with four league titles after guiding Supersport United to a hattrick of wins between 2008 and 2010, before leading the Clever Boys to league glory in 2017.

With a knack for achieving success with the underdogs, he could be entrusted to do the same with one of the ‘big three’ after reportedly being tapped up for the Kaizer Chiefs job.

Stuart Baxter: One man who knows how to lead Chiefs to glory is Stuart Baxter, who is responsible for two of their four league titles in the PSL era. The last of those happened to be their last taste of silverware, and the club management seems to have considered the tried and tested, having recently rung up the former Bafana mentor.

Benni McCarthy: A self-professed lifelong Kaizer Chiefs fan, the ex-Orlando Pirates striker is available after parting ways with Cape Town City midway through the season.

The Uefa Champions League winner could either take up the head coach role at Kaizer Chiefs or reunite with his former mentor, Hunt in what would be a formidable coach-and-assistant combo next season.

Kostadin Papic: History could repeat itself at Naturena, as the man who succeeded Middendorp after his first stint as Kaizer Chiefs coach has made himself available once more.

However, recalling the Serb is highly unlikely, given his rapport with club chairman Kaizer Motaung.

Owen da Gama: Like Hunt, the Highlands coach could be out of a job after the sale of his club. Da Gama has not ruled out turning up as the next Kaizer Chiefs coach after a successful stint with the Lions of the North.
