Kaizer Chiefs kit: Amakhosi go bold as they unveil new strip

It’s official! The Kaizer Chiefs kit that divided the Amakhosi faithful when it “leaked” earlier in the month is what they will be strolling to the field in when the new season kicks off in the coming weeks.

The Glamour Boys’ kit sponsor, Nike has in recent years not been shy to go with bold designs, with the strip the club sported in the recently-concluded season perhaps their most adventurous creation yet.

As the club announced the appointment of their new assistant coaches on Monday, fans caught the first official glimpse of the new Kaizer Chiefs kit, with Dillon Sheppard photographed wearing the blue away jersey, while Arthur Zwane donned the home top.

With a pattern depicting a lion’s mane on the home jersey, it’s a homage to chairman Kaizer Motaung’s heritage, after the South African football icon founded the club 50 years ago.

“It’s a great coincidence that we launch and announce next season’s jerseys during Heritage month in South Africa,” Kaizer Chiefs Marketing Director Jessica Motaung is quoted on the club’s website. “The home jersey is a strong symbol of the lion’s mane. And this is fitting for our Chairman Kaizer Motaung who started this institution 50 years ago. We are now paving the way for the next 50 years as we move to the next generation of Chiefs lions and leaders. “As Amakhosi we say you can’t stop the passion of our supporters as they are the catalyst for the brand.”

Family heritage meets ‘the unexpected’

In terms of their away strip, Kaizer Chiefs have mostly gone with white or black as the dominant colour, with navy sometimes figuring in.

This time they have gone with the unconventional blue with the traditional gold trim.

According to Motaung, this represents the club’s determination to improve after a turbulent last few years.

“Gold and black are our traditional colours, while blue is the colour of the sky and sea. It is often associated with royalty, depth and stability. It symbolises trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith and the truth. It is futuristic and represents the technological aspects of the jersey.”

Supporters have been urged to purchase the new Kaizer Chiefs kit, which will be available on the club’s digital store from Monday, 28 September.
