Kaizer Chiefs sweat over defensive duo ahead of crunch Baroka clash

Defenders Kgotso Moleko and Erick Mathoho are both injury doubts for Kaizer Chiefs going into the must-win encounter against Baroka at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday.

Both players took part in the 1-0 win over Chippa United on Wednesday night, making it to the second half – only to limp off.

Moleko was the first to be withdrawn from the contest, with Ramahlwe Mphahlele coming on in his place, while Siyabonga Ngezana replaced Mathoho later on.

According to coach Ernst Middendorp, it is Moleko whose participation in the Baroka’s clash is the biggest doubt.

“There are some question marks,” the German mentor told the media on Thursday. “Moleko is definitely a big question mark. With Erick Mathoho, we have to look at how far he will be recovered.”

He added;

“It’s a little bit early to say ‘this player and this player are not available’”

Chiefs went into the Chippa fixture without star goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, who has also been ruled out of the match against Baroka.

Midfielder, Lebogang Manyama, who was a doubtful starter on Wednesday, lasted around an hour before being withdrawn as a cautionary precaution.

“We had to take him out,” Middendorp continued. “It was a very clear order from the medical staff not to risk him and he gets injured, and we cannot use him on the weekend. “I hope everyone will be available, refreshed with a view to Saturday’s game.”

D-day

Chiefs go into the match against Baroka looking to match with victory non-negotiable, as defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns are breathing heavily on their necks in the title race.

Only goal-difference separates the two sides at the top of the standings, with Amakhosi enjoying an ever-so-slight advantage.

All games in the PSL 2019/20 finale will kick off at 15:30 (SAST).
