Premier League opening day preview and kick-off times 12 September

The 29th season of the English Premier League gets underway on Saturday 12 September with four matches spread across the day.

Premier League opening day preview

Defending champions Liverpool will be in action, as will Arsenal, Fulham, West Ham, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, Southampton and Leeds.

Fulham vs Arsenal 13:30

The early game and first of the Premier League season is a London derby that pits newly-promoted Fulham against Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta’s Gunners endured a difficult season last term achieving continental football only by virtue of winning the FA Cup.

Fulham came up through the playoffs returning to the Premier League after just one season down in the Championship.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton 16:00

Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace begin their season against a Southampton team that were on fire towards the tail-end of last season winning seven on the bounce.

Both Crystal Palace and Southampton will be looking for a good start to their Premier League campaign this season.

In their last two opening games, Palace have kept clean sheets against Everton and Fulham and will be looking to keep that record going on Saturday.

Saints will be looking to carry on where they left off, buoyed by the fact they’ve been victorious their last three trips to Selhurst Park.

Liverpool vs Leeds United 18:30

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool begin their title defence against newly-promoted Leeds United at Anfield.

Klopp has warned Liverpool’s title rivals that splashing out on new signings is no guarantee of success with the club looking to retain its stars rather than acquire fresh talent.

Leeds United return to the Premier League after a 16-year absence that included a spell in League One.

The meeting will be the 118th between the two sides with some famous clashes coming down the years. Leeds clinched the First Division title at Anfield in 1969 and defeated the Reds in the 1992 Charity Shield.

Liverpool haven’t lost in their last seven opening fixtures of a campaign, with six wins and a draw since losing at West Bromwich Albion in 2012.

West Ham United vs Newcastle United 21:00

West Ham United begin their 2020/21 Premier League season with the visit of Newcastle United to London Stadium on Saturday night.

The Hammers will be seeking to pick up where they left off at the end of last season, when they closed on a run of just one defeat in seven matches. Among those was a 2-2 draw at Newcastle, where the Irons twice led through goals from Michail Antonio and Tomáš Souček, before being pegged back and settling for a point.

Newcastle United head coach Steve Bruce feels the signings of Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser and Jamal Lewis have come at “just at the right time” as the Magpies get set to kick off their campaign.
