Welsh captain Alun Wyn Jones has been tipped as a possible candidate for British and Irish Lions captain ahead of the tour to South Africa.

The famous team, which comprises of players from England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland descends upon South African shores in July 2021 for the first time since their 2009 tour.

A fresh wave of controversy that has surrounded England skipper Owen Farrell has propelled Jones into being the favourite to don the armband in Warren Gatland’s side.

The flyhalf enhanced his reputation as one of the game’s bad boys earlier in the month.

This was after a dangerous tackle dished out on Wasps Charlie Atkinson – reminiscent of the ‘no-arms’ effort he handed out on Andre Esterhuisen – when the Saracens took on their London rivals in the Premiership.

His tackle earned him a red card and a subsequent ban, as well as doubt over whether he will be fit enough to skipper the Lions in South Africa.

According to Betfair, Jones now has a 7/4 chance, ahead of Farrell at 3/1 and England lock Maro Itoje at 7/2. Sky Bet has Jones at 9/4, Itoje at 3/1 and Farrell at 7/2.

The Lions play five tour matches in South Africa before facing the Springboks in a three-match series from 24 July.
