Champions League 2020: Group stage draw match-ups confirmed

English giants Manchester United face a grudge match on their return to the Uefa Champions League.

The Red Devils missed the previous edition of Europe’s elite competition after failing to finish their domestic league inside the qualifying spots.

Return to Paris

After scraping through to a third-place finish in their 2019/20 campaign, they were part of the main Champions League draw, which took place on Thursday evening (SAST).

Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s men were drawn in a tough Group H, alongside Paris Saint Germain (PSG), who finished as runners-up in the recent edition of the competition.

This sets them up for a return to the French capital, the scene of their epic coup, where they overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit to win 3-1 away from home. The victory ensured that the three-time champions progressed to the last eight of the competition, where Barcelona eliminated them.

Also drawn in the group is German outfit Red Bull Leipzig, fresh off their maiden appearance in the Champions League semi, where they exited the competition, courtesy of PSG.

Turkish champions, Istanbul Basaksehir is the other team in the group.

Other potentially tough groups include Group A, which features reigning champions Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Red Bull Salzburg and Lokomotiv Moscow, as well as Group G, where Barcelona and Juventus will go head to head while slugging it out with Dynamo Kyiv and Hungarian outfit Ferencvaros for the two spots in the next round.

Elsewhere, 2019 champions Liverpool square off with Dutch giants Ajax, with Atalanta and Midtjylland from Italy and Denmark, respectively also in Group D.
