Cole Alexander scores move abroad, joins ex-Bafana coach

Former Bidvest Wits midfielder Cole Alexander has completed a move to the Indian Super League.

The 31-year-old has been linked with a move to Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs, who have been rendered unable to register new players due to a transfer ban imposed on the club by Fifa.

He has secured a move to Odisha, coached by former Amakhosi and Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter.

This means that the duo will reunite once more, having previously worked together during their time at Supersport United.

Alexander was unveiled as an Odisha player on Saturday.

“I am extremely delighted to join Odisha FC and play in the Indian Super League for the first time. It will be really great to play under Coach Stuart Baxter again, and I can’t wait to meet my teammates,” he told the club’s official website.

“I am very excited and looking forward to the season ahead. I have heard a lot about the special fans that the club has, and though they will not be in the stadiums with us this year, we will carry them in our hearts and try and make them proud.

“I hope we can achieve something special at Odisha FC in the upcoming seasons.”

The move comes after a stellar final season at Wits, where Alexander helped the club to a fourth-place finish behind South Africa’s traditional “big three” of Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

He featured in all but five of the now-defunct club’s league appearances, netting three times, including a goal against each of the famous Soweto giants.

Alexander leaves South Africa having turned out for six top-flight clubs, after playing in the colours of Ajax Cape Town, Vasco da Gama, Polokwane City and Chippa United, along with Supersport and Wits.
