Kaizer Chiefs head coach Gavin Hunt was left impressed with his side’s performance in their 1-0 victory over Chippa United on Tuesday night.

Kaizer Chiefs had just two days to shrug off their catastrophic opening DStv Premiership loss against Mamelodi Sundowns over the weekend however Gavin Hunt’s men put in a fine performance against Chippa United to restore some form of hope at Naturena.

Chippa United goalkeeper Veli Mothwa rescued his side from what could have been a disastrous evening thanks to a number of fine saves however a Gragory Damons own goal handed Kaizer Chiefs a marginal victory and Gavin Hunt has since shared his thoughts on the overall performance of the Amakhosi.

Despite only scoring a solitary goal on the night, Kaizer Chiefs showed great promise after carving out a total of 13 shots at goal while hitting the woodwork four time. More impressive than their efforts at goal were their ability to stretch the Chippa United defence and Gavin Hunt believes it was the first time he actually witnessed his side ‘play proper football’.

“Tonight, for the first time I think we looked like a proper football team.” Gavin Hunt told SuperSport TV after the game.

“I thought Njabulo Blom in midfield was outstanding. And that’s the difference. We got a little bit of legs in there. Ngcobo for me I think he’s a great little player. But the whole team for me, I think defensively looked good.

“Ngezana came in, did better, Zulu I (Gavin Hunt) worked with him for one or two days at left back, we had to what we had to do. He was fantastic. We created so many opportunities tonight. Let’s be honest, we hit the post a few times. That second half, there must have been a patch of five minutes where the keeper made four or five saves.

“You think it’s going to be one of those games where they get half a chance. But to be fair we looked really solid and much better out of possession. And I’ve always said to be a good team, you’ve got to be the best team without the ball.”

Hunt reveals plan of action following CAS appeal outcome

“I have, over the last month been looking at it with the hope that we are not going to get turned away, so, we are going to make it better, and I want to try and improve the team with new players,” Gavin Hunt said as quoted by Citizen.

“Obviously we know that we have got certain areas where we lack the competent players but it is what it is and we just have to get on with it. So, one step forward is to try and mould players and we will take it from there.”

Gavin Hunt and Kaizer Chiefs next turn their attention to rivals Orlando Pirates who they face on Saturday afternoon in their MTN8 first leg semi-final clash at the Orlando Stadium.
