Newlands loses out on Proteas New Year’s Day Test for Sri Lanka tour

Newlands will not host the New Year’s Day Test match in January 2020, with the entire series against Sri Lanka set to take place in Gauteng.

The Proteas will play their first match in the game’s longest format in 11 months when they meet Sri Lanka in a two-match series kicking off in December this year.

New Year’s Day Test moves away from Newlands

The first of these matches is the Boxing Day Test which remains in Centurion, while the second and final fixture in the series will be played at The Wanderers between 3 and 7 January.

This will only be the second time a New Year’s Test played in South Africa takes place outside Cape Town for the first time since readmission.

Since South Africa was welcomed back into the global sporting community in 1992, Newlands has always staged the fixture, with the exception of five summers where the Proteas toured Australia during the festive period.

The only other instance where the New Year’s Day Test did not take place in the Mother City was in 2014 when no international cricket was scheduled during the window, with the Proteas’ two-match series against India concluding with the Boxing Day match.

South Africa resume international competition by welcoming 50-overs world champions England for a limited-overs tour consisting of three T20 Internationals and as many ODIs.

The tour will take place behind closed doors with Newlands and Boland Park in Paarl sharing hosting duties.

The first match is a T20I taking place on Tuesday 27 November, with the last a 50-over game on Wednesday, 9 December.

Next to arrive in South Africa are the Sri Lankans, who last toured the country in early 2019.

Their tour will only consist of the two Test matches, while Australia is set to return to the country in February for a red-ball tour.

The home leg of the season will conclude with a limited-overs tour by Pakistan, while Cricket South Africa (CSA) is also exploring the possibility of touring the country for the first time since 2007.
