JOHANNESBURG – There has been a cash-in-transit heist in Florida, west of Johannesburg.

Details were still sketchy, but police and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) were on the scene.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said motorists should use alternative routes to avoid the crime scene. Motorists were urged to avoid Hendrik Potgieter Road.

“The road has been cordoned off due to that crime scene and motorists can either use Ontdekkerspark or Golden road as alternative routes.”

ONE DEAD, ANOTHER INJURED

According to ER24 paramedics, a man was killed and another injured during the cash heist.

When the paramedics arrived at the scene on Hendrik Potgieter and Ontdekkers intersection, they found the vehicle on the side of the road.

A security officer sustained minor injuries. However, a few minutes later paramedics were called to another shooting incident close by where a man believed to be linked to the cash-in-transit heist was shot dead.

“Assessments showed that he had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his chest. Nothing could be done for him, and he was declared dead,” said ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring.
