Mamelodi Sundowns announced the appointment of Manqoba Mngqithi and Rhulani Mokwena as joint head coaches on Sunday 4 October 2020.

Mngqithi and Mokwena appointed joint head coaches

Pitso Mosimane’s most-trusted assistant coaches Mngqithi and Mokwena have been chosen to lead the team into a new era.

The club are hopeful of continued success under the joint-guidance of the two men and they have been mandated to win the league in their first term and improve in the Caf Champions League.

Mokwena had been linked with a move to Al Ahly to join Mosimane, but he affirmed his commitment to Mamelodi Sundowns this weekend.

The move continues the trend of Mamelodi Sundowns furthering the careers of local coaches.

Sundowns have given Mngqithi a slightly elevated status indicating that his opinion will prevail when there isn’t a consensus between the two coaches.

“Manqoba and Rhulani have been with Mamelodi Sundowns for many years and were part of the technical team that were crowned champions of Africa in 2016 and have also won the Premier Soccer League and other titles in South Africa,” Club Chairman Patrice Motsepe said in a statement.

“The board of Mamelodi Sundowns was particularly keen to appoint South African coaches and express its commitment and confidence in the talent and ability of our local coaches.

“Manqoba, Rhulani and the technical team at Sundowns will focus on defending the PSL and the other titles that we won during our historic 50-year anniversary. They will also advance and continue with the objective that we stated in 2004, which is to make Mamelodi Sundowns one of the best clubs on the African continent.”

Having already unveiled Kermit Erasmus as a Brazilian, Mamelodi Sundowns have indicated more announcements could be forthcoming this week.

Sundowns will face Bloemfontein Celtic in the MTN 8 quarterfinals on the first weekend of the 2020/21 season in two weeks.

The club have been on a huge recruitment drives which has seen them bring in Golden Boot winner Peter Shalulile, Ajax Cape Town rising star Grant Margerman, former Bidvest Wits gloveman Ricardo Goss and the list of illustrious names coming in goes on.

The expectations of Mamelodi Sundowns

The bar is set incredibly high at Chloorkop, and after a treble-winning season, there will be pressure to deliver more silverware in the 2020/21 term.

Sundowns will begin yet another Caf Champions League campaign in November with four matches standing between them and group stage participation for the sixth successive season.
