Watch: Khune howler lets Sundowns in for opener [video]

Kaizer Chiefs fans were left fuming after goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune let in Mamelodi Sundowns goal barely an hour into the new season, which kicked off on Saturday.

Amakhosi were trailing as early as the 37th minute after Peter Shalulile headed in from a corner with the 33-year-old former Bafana skipper nowhere near the goal line.

Khune mistake proves costly

The opening goal came after a few shaky moments from Khune, who is enjoying a period as first-choice option after a rough season, where starts where hard to come by.

Preferred by Gavin Hunt over Nigerian international Daniel Akpeyi, with Bruce Bvuma named on the bench.

In what was his third league appearance of the year, Khune did not exactly cover himself in glory.

While defending a corner against Sundowns, the 33-year-old came out of his line to punch the ball away from the danger, but missed it completely. It met an eager Shalulile, who headed in to claim his first goal for his new team.

Things were made ever more difficult for Kaizer Chiefs, who conceded a second just eight minutes from the break.

This time around, Khune managed to make a save – from a Themba Zwane shot – but the rebound landed in the path of another new Mamelodi Sundowns signing in Kermit Erasmus.

The former Cape Town City marksman made the most of an open net and scrambling defence, firing in to make it 2-0.

At the time of publishing, Sundowns were still two-up, with 20 minutes of regulation play still left to be played.
