Anele Ngcongca dies: His journey to the top of European and local football

The roads have claimed yet another South African footballer’s life, this time in the form of Mamelodi Sundowns defender Anele Ngcongca.

Anele Ngcongca was set join AmaZulu on loan however the former Belgium Pro League winner tragically passed on in a motor vehicle accident in the early hours of Monday morning in KwaZulu-Natal.

The 33-year-old right-back will fondly be remembered for his stellar performances at Mamelodi Sundowns in which he made over a century of appearances for the club while lifting three league titles, the Telkom Knockout, the Nedbank Cup and the CAF Super Cup.

The footballing fraternity was left in shock on Monday morning after news broke that former Bafana Bafana international Anele Ngcongca passed away after being involved in a devastating accident according to ENCA.

Ngcongca conquered Belgium with Genk dream team

While many South Africans will remember Anele Ngcongca for the joy he brought at Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, the deceased defender will also go down in the history books of Belgian football.

Anele Ngcongca was a critical member of what many believed were Genk’s greatest team to date. Alongside the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Thibaut Courtois, Ngcongca helped Genk lift the Belgium top flight title in 2011 while also lifting the Belgium Cup in 2009 and 2013.

He later joined French outfit Troyes on season-long loan before returning back to South Africa in 2016 where he joined up with Pitso Mosimane at Mamelodi Sundowns.

Experienced Bafana Bafana international

Anele Ngcongca was also a standard feature for Bafana Bafana for a number of years during the twilight of his career. He earned over 50 caps for the national team while featuring at major tournaments like the 2010 Fifa World Cup as well as the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.
