Banyana Banyana put seven goals past hapless Comoros

Banyana Banyana finished off the group stages in the Cosafa Women’s Championship with a commanding performance against Comoros, winning 7-0 at Wolfson Stadium on Monday.

The defending champions had already qualified for the next round after beating Angola and Eswatini in their two previous matches.

They came up against a side against which they achieved their record victory margin in their last encounter, where they ran off emphatic 17-0 victors at the same venue in the 2019 edition of the competition.

Five-star Holweni puts Comoros to the sword

As was expected, the host nation came out guns blazing against the minnows, but had to wait to be rewarded for their dominance.

Patience paid off with the breakthrough coming in the eighth minute via a long-range effort from Sibulele Holweni, who was helped along by a goalkeeping error which saw the ball land in the back of the net.

The second came on the half-hour mark via the same player, who finished from up close this time around to make it 2-0.

Hilda Magaia, who had been an ever-present threat – rounded off the scoring in the first half.

The second half began with Holweni completing her hattrick, and the fifth goal as Mapula Kgoale piled on more misery on the islanders.

The period between the hour-mark and the final whistle did not look like producing a goal, until Holweni chipped in with her fourth goal of the afternoon to make it 6-0.

She was not done, as right on the final minute of regulation time, she grabbed her fifth.

That would be the last goal scored on the day, with Banyana asserting their dominance in the tournament going into the knockout stages.
