Baroka sack Dylan Kerr, appoint new head coach

Premier Soccer League (PSL) outfit Baroka have sacked head coach Dylan Kerr and swiftly named his replacement on Friday morning.

The former Leeds United defender had been placed under suspension by the outfit after being charged with bringing the club into disrepute. This was after he made comments about the inner-workings at the club during the latter part of the 2019/20 season.

Following a lengthy disciplinary process, Kerr has been shown the door with Thoka Matsimela, who had served as first-team caretaker coach, stepping up to the helm.

The new man in charge took over while ex-Baroka mentor Wedson Nyirenda was waiting for his work permit to be finalised.

He has been occupying the hot seat during the club’s opening fixtures, where they have started well, winning two and drawing one match to land in second place before the international break.

Kerr was appointed as Baroka’s head coach during the latter half of the 2019/20 season after resigning as provincial rivals’ Black Leopards mentor.

He guided Bakgaga out of the relegation zone, famously holding Kaizer Chiefs to a draw in the final game of the season, where Amakhosi needed to secure victory in order to clinch the title.

Following an upset over eventual league champions Mamelodi Sundowns inside the PSL bio-bubble in August, the 53-year-old publically criticised club management, suggesting that there was interference with how he conducted his job.

“I know my job. I know my job because I have studied it for 30 odd years as a player and a coach and if people leave me alone to do my job‚ I’ll make this club a success. And unfortunately, ‚ I should be happy with this result but inside I’m really‚ really angry,” Kerr said on SuperSport TV.
