Middendorp has resigned as head coach of Ethiopian giants Saint George SC just one month into his three-year contract, paving the way for a fourth stint as coach of Maritzburg United.

Middendorp was unveiled at the East African side in mid-October as he moved on swiftly from his Amakhosi sacking.

However, citing the current political unrest and concerns over his family, the 62-year-old German has tendered his resignation with immediate effect, which was reportedly reluctantly accepted by the club’s hierarchy.

According to the KickOff website, Middendorp is said to have offered two months of his salary as a settlement to mutually terminate his three-year deal with the 29-time league champions.

MARITZBURG UNITED FIRED ERIC TINKLER THIS WEEK

Off-field issues aside, Middendorp’s resignation opens the door for a return to KwaZulu-Natal outfit Maritzburg United who are currently without a head coach following the firing of Eric Tinkler earlier in the week.

Maritzburg United are also without a single DStv Premiership log point having lost all four of their matches this season.

Middendorp has an extensive coaching CV having twice held the top job at Kaizer Chiefs (2005-2007 and 2018-2020).

Besides his three previous stints at Maritzburg United, he has also held coaching roles at Golden Arrows, Bloemfontein Celtic, Free State Stars and Chippa United.

Maritzburg United are next in action on Friday at home to SuperSport United. Kick-off is at 20:00.

Delron Buckley has since taken over training sessions at the Team of Choice and is set to lead the team at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
