How much each golfer won (a lot) at the 2020 Masters at Augusta National

The Covid-19 delayed 84th Masters at Augusta National is in the record books.

Shifted to November for the first time from its traditional April slot, the tournament took place without patrons and in eerie silence.

That didn’t stop records galore from falling.

Dustin Johnson emerged victorious after the four days, finishing on 20-under par. That total equaled the lowest under-par score in any Major and broke the Masters record by two shots.

Johnson also went wire-to-wire, the first time a winner has done so since Jordan Spieth in 2015.

Johnson’s five-shot winning margin was the largest since Tiger Woods won by 12 shots in 1997.

Meanwhile, Australian Cameron Smith became the first golfer in Masters history to shoot four rounds in the 60s – yet still didn’t win!

And in some ‘unwanted’ history, Woods’ septuple bogey 10 on Sunday at the par-3, 12th hole was his worst score on any hole in his stellar career to date.

Johnson’s green jacket came with a healthy pay day as well – a cool $2.07 million in fact.

Not that professional golfers at the highest level are too concerned with money anymore, but at today’s exchange rate (R15.49/$1) that equates to R32 million.

Or R120 000 per shot.

Dylan Frittelli was the leading South African, finishing in a tie for fifth-place. Johannesburg-born Frittelli took home $437 000 (R6.8 million).

In addition, for finishing in the top 12, Frittelli earned automatic entry into the 2021 Masters which, at this stage at least, is scheduled for its usual April 8-11 slot.

Other South Africans in the money included Louis Oosthuizen who finished in a tie for 23rd ($115 000 (R1.8 million) and Charl Schwartzel who tied for 25th and earned $91 713 (R1.4 million).

Christiaan Bezuidenhout’s tie for 38th-place was good enough to earn him $50 600 (R800 000), while Justin Harding banked $10 000 (R155 000) despite missing the halfway cut.

Erik van Rooyen, who pulled out after the first round with an undisclosed injury, also took home $10 000 (R155 000).

The good news for golf fans – and those of the Masters in particular – it’s only 20 weeks and some change until next year’s tournament!
