Kaizer Chiefs hoping to find better form 5 600km away in Cameroon

Kaizer Chiefs are set to turn their attention to the African continent when they begin their 2020/21 CAF Champions League campaign this weekend.

PREVIEW: WHO ARE KAIZER CHIEFS’ CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE CAMEROONIAN OPPONENTS?

Chiefs, who qualified for the tournament after finishing second in the Absa Premiership last season, have been drawn against Cameroonian champions PWD Bamenda.

The first leg, which is scheduled for this Sunday, will see Amakhosi make a 5 600km journey north to Douala, having departed OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday evening.

The team will then take a 77km bus trip to the coastal town of Limbe, where they will face the Bamenda-based outfit at the Omnisport Stadium.

Kick-off is at 16:00 SA time.

“Amakhosi will have a training session in Limbe on Friday afternoon on one of the grounds surrounding the stadium,” Chiefs said in a statement.

“The team will then train on the main pitch on Saturday afternoon, as they look to get a feel of match-like conditions in the picturesque town which sits on the foothills of the famed Mount Cameroon.

“Chiefs will leave Limbe on Monday afternoon for Douala Airport and should be home on Tuesday morning.”

Amakhosi will host the return leg at FNB Stadium next Friday, December 4 at 18:00.

While Amakhosi are down in 11th place in the DStv Premiership after a woeful start to their league campaign having lost two, drawn two and won just one match to date, they will draw comfort from the fact their opponents haven’t played since March.

In addition, the match won’t be held at Bamenda’s usual home ground.

This is the sixth time Chiefs will feature in the CAF Champions League with their first participation coming back in 1993.

The winner of the two-leg tie will face Angolan side Primero De Agosto over two legs and the winner of that clash will move onto the group stages with 15 other teams.
