Masters latest | Dylan Frittelli grabs share of Round 1 lead, Erik van Rooyen pulls out

South Africa’s Dylan Frittelli has taken a share of the first-round lead at the 84th Masters at Augusta National.

LEADERBOARD | Masters at Augusta National

After play was halted due to darkness on Thursday, Frittelli returned to the course under sunny skies on Friday to sign for a 7-under, 65.

That was good enough for a share of the lead with England’s Paul Casey who completed his round on Thursday, and world No 1 Dustin Johnson who also wrapped up his round on Friday.

The last South African to lead or hold a share of the first round lead at the Masters was Trevor Immelman back in 2008. Immelman would go on to win that tournament.

Frittelli, 30, is playing in only his second Masters.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen, who was playing in his first Masters, withdrew shortly after his first round with an unspecified injury. Van Rooyen had posted a 4-over, 76.
