A tombstone for former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa has been unveiled in KwaZulu-Natal.
The unveiling at the Mayville Heroes Acre cemetery comes more than six years after he was tragically shot and killed on October 26, 2014.
MURDER CASE IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION
The murder case is still under investigation.
Bafana coach Molefi Ntseki and captain Thulani Hlatshwayo, along with the rest of the national squad were in attendance.
Also present was South African Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan who explained the delay in the building of the memorial.
At the time of Meyiwa’s murder, SAFA had promised to build a statue in his honour.
However, Jordaan said that it was the wish of Meyiwa’s late father, Sam, that the statue only be built once his killers were found.
“I used to talk to Senzo’s father and remember originally we wanted to put a statue, a monument, but he was always against it, always against the unveiling of the tombstone,” Jordaan said.
“Because in his understanding once you put a tombstone, that means closure and you walk away, and the tombstone stands there as a memory and monument of his life.
“That’s why we came here because in this case eventually people were arrested, people appeared in court and in our understanding it is time for closure.
Bafana are playing in Durban, Meyiwa’s hometown, on Friday in their next AFCON qualification match at 21:00.
Jordaan added that he hoped the monument would inspire Bafana to honour Meyiwa and win the match against Sao Tome and Principe.
Meyiwa played 107 matches for Orlando Pirates and seven matches for Bafana before his tragic death aged 30.
