Supersport United coach tips Orlando Pirates as title favourites

Supersport United coach Kaitano Tembo believes Orlando Pirates are the favourites to win the league title.

The former Zimbabwean international is looking to guide his team to victory against the Soweto giants at Orlando Stadium on Saturday at 18:00 (SAST). Should the Tshwane outfit manage to pull off the result, it would be the first defeat for the hosts in the ongoing campaign after six matches across competitions.

Speaking in the lead-up to the highly-anticipated clash, Tembo said he expected Pirates to be in among the contenders for top honours come the end of the season.

“They [Pirates] have a great squad, and I think that they are the favourites to win the league title this season. They have not lost a game and are in the MTN 8 Cup final. They are high on confidence,” he said.

“It is a huge game for both teams, they look more solid and are playing with a very good work ethic. It won’t be an easy game for us but we have confidence in ourselves as well. We will go there and give ourselves a chance.”

Long wait for glory

While United have consistently collected silverware in recent years, it has been the opposite, who last added to their trophy cabinet in 2014.

Midfielder Vincent Pule – a goal scorer the last time the two sides met – believes it is important that the Buccaneers maintain their intensity in order to win silverware.

“We must maintain the level of focus and anything is possible. It will be great if this generation can win a trophy, it’s been very long without silverware.”

Pirates are sixth in the league standings and will contest the MTN 8 Cup final against Bloemfontein Celtic in December.
