‘We have to knuckle down and work harder’ – Gavin Hunt

Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt bemoaned his side’s lack of good luck as they crashed out of the MTN 8 in the hands of rivals Orlando Pirates.

A 2-0 victory at FNB Stadium handed the Buccaneers a 5-0 aggregate win over two legs of the semifinal.

No end to Kaizer Chiefs woes

It was through two second-half goals, which both came from a counter-attack situation.

The first of those was scored by Fortune Makaringe, who finished against the run of play after Chiefs got close to opening the scoring at the other end. The crossbar kept things level before man-of-the-match Deon Hotto broke away seconds after, with the rebound from a save by Daniel Akpeyi falling into the path of the Pirates midfielder.

The other goal in the encounter was finished expertly by second-half substitute Linda Mntambo after another clinical counter-attack.

Hunt spoke after the game, and was at a loss of words to explain Chiefs’ lack of good fortune.

“I think it is a true reflection. Um, something we need to knuckle down and work harder, and do the other part of the game which we are not doing,” he told Supersport TV.

“There is a part of the game that we are not doing. Yes, because of a lot of things, but we’ve got to try get that right.

“It was very dominant, but not enough creation of chances. The second half, the ball, I don’t know if it was over the line or not. I’m not sure. Then you know, 10 seconds later they run down the other side and score. That ball goes in… that’s the way it’s been going a little bit, but ja.”

The defeat was the third for Kaizer Chiefs this season, after a 3-0 loss against Mamelodi Sundowns in their league opener, which was followed by an identical score in the first leg against Pirates.
