Kaizer Chiefs legend launches scathing attack on Gavin Hunt

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Abel Shongwe has launched a scathing attack on Amakhosi coach Gavin Hunt.

The 53-year-old Swazi born midfielder who joined Kaizer Chiefs at the age of 18 believes Gavin Hunt is shooting himself in the foot with his tactics and team selection.

The Amakhosi began the 2020/2021 campaign in disaster fashion having picked up just seven points from their opening eight games, leaving them in 13th position on the DStv Premiership log standings.

Gavin Hunt’s Kaizer Chiefs team selections are ‘weird’ – Shongwe

“Remember that the players that Hunt is using are the ones, who almost won the league title with Ernst Middendorp last season,” Kaizer Chiefs legend Abel Shongwe told Isolezwe.

“In my opinion, Hunt is finding it difficult to coach Chiefs. Sometimes he just sets up the team in a weird way. What has happened to Kaizer Chiefs is shocking now, something must be done immediately.”

Amakhosi may need counseling – Shongwe

Kaizer Chiefs’ heartbreaking final day Absa Premiership title loss to Mamelodi Sundowns last season has taken a massive mental knock on the Amakhosi according to Shongwe and Hunt’s men may need counseling to get over the trauma.

“I don’t know if they need counselling or not. When you see Chiefs players coming into the stadium that confidence is no longer with them.” – Shongwe added.

“Lately, it has hit even the goalkeepers. This is the first time I’ve seen Khune make such terrible mistakes. You can see the players are playing for themselves, this is no longer a team, they are not working together as a team. It’s just individuals playing on the pitch.”

Gavin Hunt will have little time to turn things around in 2021 with Kaizer Chiefs facing Primeiro de Agosto on 05 January in their second leg CAF Champions League clash before hosting former head coach Ernst Middendorp and Maritzburg United on 09 January.
