Mamelodi Sundowns win CAF Champions League 1st leg tie in Botswana

Mamelodi Sundowns’ dream start to the 2020/21 season continued on Tuesday when they triumphed in their CAF Champions League first round 1st leg match.

The Brazilians took on Jwaneng Galaxy of Botswana at the Lobatse Stadium in Lobatse.

Jwaneng Galaxy are the current leaders of the Botswana Premier League after 20 (of 30) matches.

SUNDOWNS GOT OFF TO THE PERFECT START

Sundowns got off to the perfect start when striker Mothobi Mvala gave Steve Komphela’s side a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute.

A minute after the half-time break Namibian international defender Peter Shalulile doubled Sundowns’ advantage.

And that’s the way the match ended, giving Sundowns two all-important away goals.

The return leg will take place on Wednesday, January 6 with the venue and kick-off time yet to be confirmed.

Should Sundowns emerge victorious from the tie, they will be one of 16 teams to enter the group phase of this season’s tournament.

KAIZER CHIEFS ARE SA’S OTHER CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SIDE

On the domestic front, Sundowns lead the DStv Premiership after eight matches as the league season takes a short break until early 2021.

Kaizer Chiefs are South Africa’s other team in this season’s CAF Champions League.

Amakhosi will be in action in their first round, 1st leg clash against Angolan side Clube Desportivo Primeiro de Agosto on Wednesday, December 23.

Kick-off at the FNB Stadium in at 18:00.

Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly are the defending champions.
