SAIDS warns athletes over supplement use in light of Aphiwe Dyantyi ban

The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) has once again reminded athletes to exercise caution when using supplements.

SAIDS went on to add that extra caution needs to be taken with products that purport to guarantee quick muscle gains and strength without commensurate strength and conditioning routines.

The warning comes after SAIDS confirmed the decision rendered by the Independent Doping Hearing Panel in the Aphiwe Dyantyi doping matter.

Lions and Springbok star Dyantyi failed a doping test of both his ‘A’ and ‘B’ samples after he returned a positive test for three banned substances: methanedienone, methyltestosterone and LGD-4033 in mid-2019.

The three-person Panel accepted Dyantyi’s guilty plea to the doping charge.

They found that Dyantyi had failed to satisfy the burden of proof to establish that his positive dope test was not intentional.

The Panel relied on the framework for sanctions in the World Anti-Doping Code that outlined a sanction of four years for the doping offence in the matter.

DYANTYI HAS THE OPTION TO APPEAL

Dyantyi was effectively banned from participating in sport from the date (August 13, 2019) when he was provisionally suspended to August 12, 2023.

Dyantyi’s rights were reserved to seek relief through lodging an appeal should he believe that he has substantive grounds for such an appeal.

He has 21 days in order to do so.

Dyantyi, now 26, would be free to play again a fortnight before his 29th birthday – and a month or so ahead of the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.

Dyantyi has played 13 Tests for the Springboks to date.
