Second SA v England ODI at Newlands on Monday will NOT go ahead

The second One-Day International (ODI) between South Africa and England which was due to take place at Newlands on Monday, December 7 will NOT go ahead.

AWAITING OUTCOME OF INDEPENDENT RATIFICATION

Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed as much in a press release late on Sunday evening.

The decision has been taken by CSA and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) while they await the outcome of the independent ratification of the two unconfirmed positive Covid-19 tests from the England camp and the continued health and wellbeing of both playing groups.

Once the findings of the review have been received, CSA and the ECB will then discuss how best to proceed concerning the remaining two matches of this ODI series.

England’s tour of South Africa has been hard hit by Covid-19 positive cases.

ENGLAND SET TO LEAVE SA ON THURSDAY

Two unnamed Proteas players tested positive prior to the T20 series, followed by a third player ahead of the ODI series.

That third test saw the opening ODI at Newlands last Friday postponed to Sunday.

However, two positive results returned by hotel staff inside the England bio-bubble saw that match in Paarl on Sunday cancelled.

That leaves two matches still to be played before England board a charter flight back home on Thursday, December 10.

At this stage it appears easier to simply scrap the ODI series altogether.
